What should be considered a clinical exam?
What criteria must be met for an educational exam?
A clinically-indicated ultrasound examination:

Is used for medical decision making for that patient during their emergency department visit

Standard imaging consent is obtained

Needs to be documented in Butterfly and attested by the credentialed attending. When signed, the attending places the images in the CLINICAL folder

report and images will transfer to the patient’s chart in EPIC

The physician should discuss their examination as part of their medical decision making in the chart
An educational ultrasound examination:

Is done for provider education ONLY

Requires patient verbal consent and the patient should verbalize understanding that the exam is for education only

Must have a confirmatory study (CT, XR, US, MRI) performed or ordered prior to the exam

Needs to be documented in Butterfly and attested by the credentialed attending. When signed, the attending places the images in the EDUCATIONAL folder

No report or images transfer into EPIC
Findings are not discussed in MDM
